Authority that needs to announce itself has already weakened. The most consequential figures in a room are often the quietest — their influence is structural, not stylistic.

Presence precedes power because presence is unfakeable. Titles can be claimed; attention cannot. The person others orient toward, without instruction, is the person who carries weight.

To read presence accurately is to read the order of a room before anyone has spoken.
